Keys to Managing a Remote Team
There are more companies utilizing remote workers in their everyday operations than ever before. With all of the tools and apps like Skype available, remote work is more accessible to people than in days past when conference calls and email were the only options to stay in touch with those outside of the office. There are still some issues that we face when managing a remote team:
Stay in Touch
It is no secret that good communication is the key to effectively managing a remote team. Communication between all members of the team should be seamless. This doesn’t mean that you implement a “reply all” only policy to company emails. The goal isn’t to create a barrage of irrelevant messages being sent to everyone. It means that remote workers know that they can contact anyone on the team and expect a helpful response quickly. This type of communication is key to a happy and productive remote team.
Be Inclusive
One of the biggest challenges of managing a remote team is making sure that remote workers feel that they are equal and integral parts of the team. If your team consists of both remote and on-site workers, you will need to make sure that your remote employees are kept up-to-date and are included in any meetings and events possible. A good leader will work hard to make sure that remote workers are not treated any differently and don’t feel “out of the loop” compared to on-site team members.
Use Technology to Your Advantage
There are so many programs and apps that cater to running a business more smoothly. Many of these tools are designed to make coordinating a team easier, no matter where the members are located. Project management tools, cloud-based document sharing tools, and video conferencing tools have all made remote work (and managing a remote team) easier. Find out what tools could benefit your company and make managing a remote team easier for you.
